World Vision China Is Planning a Response to the Coronavirus Outbreak
WHO declared the outbreak of novel coronavirus a global emergency on 30 January 2020 as the outbreak continues to spread outside China, and there have been 98 reported cases in 18 other countries. Most cases have emerged in people who have travelled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began.
As per the most recent update from National Health Commission of China on 30 January 2020, there are 9692 confirmed and 15238 suspected cases throughout the country. Of the confirmed cases, 1527 are severe and 213 people have died. 171 people have recovered and been discharged from hospital.
World Vision China does not have operations in Wuhan, or in Hubei Province, where the vast majority of infections and deaths have occurred to date. As of midnight 29 January 2020, within the counties where our Area Programs are located, there are 10 confirmed cases (in Honghe County, Yuanyang County of Yunnan Province, Baihe County of Shaanxi Province, Duchang County and Shicheng County of Jiangxi Province, and Duan County of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region). In the areas where World Vision has its offices, there are 155 confirmed cases (in Tianjin, Xian City of Shaanxi Province, Kunming City of Yunnan Province and Guangzhou City of Guangdong Province).
As the epidemic is spreading at a rapid pace, World Vision China Coronavirus Response Team has been closely monitoring the situation and prepare for response.
The initial response plan is:
1. Meet the shortage in medical supplies to protect the sponsored children, their communities, and World Vision staff.
2. Equip local government and health departments and hospitals in World Vision’s project sites to increase their capacity to detect and treat cases and to improve public education and awareness.
World Vision China is looking for funding support or GIK donation of medical supplies to meet the additional shortfall. We are currently working on procurement of medical supplies and personal protective items from both within China and overseas.
